Essay about Media, Sports, Athletes, and the Health of...

Image is nothing, thirst is everything. This is a slogan used by the soft drink Sprite. It tells a consumer not to buy a product because of the labeling, packaging, or the way it is presented, but to instead buy it because it tastes good. This seems to be an honest and open statement, not what you would expect to hear in an advertisement. Ironically though, just before this slogan flashes on the screen, Kobe Bryant and Grant Hill, two of the NBAs rising starts, are shown talking about how wonderful Sprite is. This slogan contradicts what the rest of the advertisement says, and it contradicts what the advertisement industry tries to do in general. The use of sports icons in advertisements for the food industry, especially those†¦show more content†¦This is far from the truth. If a person were to drink a carbonated beverage before physical activity, it would cause him to be sick, possibly to the point of vomiting. The ad is misleading, but it does influence consume rs to buy Sprite. But does the athlete really eat or drink the product they endorse? nbsp; Consider the commercial, in which Sammy Sosa is seen skipping a baseball game, so that he can go get a Big Mac from McDonalds. The commercial shows Sosa eating the Big Mac because he loves them. If Sosa were in fact to eat Big Macs frequently, as the commercial implies, he would not be in the shape that he is. In fact, professional athletes have a fairly strict diet and often give up eating certain foods during season. This is not what is portrayed in the commercial If aspiring little Leaguers were to constantly eat Big Macs because Sammy likes them, pretty soon the want to-be-baseball players would be unable to run the bases. McDonalds uses Sosa to reach a large group of consumers. nbsp; These commercials are sending a bad message to young athletes of America. The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald - 684 Words

Everyone has heard of the phrase â€Å"stalker,† and everyone has heard of the concept of â€Å"love.† While these two are separate terms, what happens when the two become mistaken for one another? When does admiration become obsession? When is the line crossed from lover to stalker? In the novel The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, the main character, Jay Gatsby, is a very wealthy man who has once had a fling with Daisy Buchanan. Gatsby and Daisy were once in love but time came and went. Gatsby went to war, and Daisy married another man. When Gatsby gets back from war, he makes himself into a new persona to capture Daisy’s attention in hopes of rekindling their love. However, Gatsby takes his love to the point of obsession. He makes unrealistic rumors about himself, wastes money on luxuries to capture her attention, and expects too much from the woman he claims to love. Gatsby’s love for Daisy is not real love. He has many stalker-like qualities, rath er than the romantic love so many are accustomed to. Gatsby does not quite grasp the true concept of love. As Daisy and Gatsby first met and fell in love five years prior, they do not know one another. They know who each other used to be, but that is simply a depiction of the past. When the two ex-lovers reunite, Nick states, â€Å"He literally glowed, without a word or a gesture of exultation a new well-being radiated from him and filled the little room† (Fitzgerald 89). Case Analysis for Samsung Electronics 1. What is SMIC’s strategy? Should Samsung be concerned about SMIC? SMIC seems to execute the same kind of strategy Samsung used before to succeed. The strategy is selling their products at low prices and growing their market share at the expense of profitability. We will write a custom essay sample on Case Study for Samsung Electronics or any similar topic only for you Order Now SMIC may threaten Samsung’s business in the future, but not too much. Although SMIC can get many resources, such as cheap funds and lands from Chinese government and foreign investors, SMIC only focuses on producing chips, not designing chips. Samsung’s success depends on its constant technology innovation, leading to high quality products and efficient manufacturing process which will benefit Samsung with high retail prices and low cost. SMIC seems hard to get core technology from their partners unless forming a joint venture. However, cooperating with chip manufacturers in Taiwan seems more attractive for the leading technology owners. Except the technology, Samsung still enjoy unit cost advantage in raw materials, RD and depreciation. SMIC may threaten Samsung’s old generation products. However, memory chip industry is a tech-oriented industry, Samsung can still maintain its leading position because its advantage in innovation. What Samsung should concern is that the fast growing Chinese market (estimated to be the second-largest semi-conduct buyer in 2010), their global competitors may get market-entry advantages through cooperating with SMIC. 2. The low cost position. Samsung operating profit advantage over the industry composite is $2. 11 per unit, 34% from selling price and 66% from cost advantage. To SMIC, it is 1. 78 per unit, 70% from selling price and 30% from cost advantage (Exhibit 1). For the comparative cost analysis, Samsung have unit advantage over the industry composite in all the five elements. They are raw materials 36%, labor 27%, depreciation 18%, RD 3%, SGA 25. 29%. Compared to SMIC, Samsung has advantages in raw material 36%, depreciation 17% and RD 25%, but has disadvantages among labor 57% and SGA 48% (Exhibit 2). . 1 Analysis Samsung VS Industry Composite a. Samsung’s unit selling price advantage comes from two aspects. First, PC OEM manufacturers would pay 1% price premium to reliable suppliers. Second, Samsung can customize its products for some special use because its diverse products line to get premium. Third, Samsung has the most advanced products which can enjoy high selling price during the first several-month launching time. b. Samsung’s unit raw material cost advantage come from three aspects. First, the material suppliers will give maximum 5% discount to large volume buying. Second, the usage of 12-inch wafer (reduce 10% cost per chip) and 0. 11? m processing technology(80%, the highest yield rate) makes Samsung get more chips with same amount of materials. Assuming the weighted average raw material cost per chip of Samsung is 100%, the Mircon will be 134%, Indineon 116% and the Hynix 161% (Exhibit 3). c. Samsung’s unit labor’s cost may be explained by the salary differences between Samsung ($44000 per year) and the industry ($49312 per year, weighted average by production volume). Also, there are some invisible issues. Samsung provides equal and competitive corporation value, unique evaluation and promotion system and humanity warfare for their employees. These elements make Samsung more productive, so the labor cost per unit is lower. d. The reason for Samsung’s unit depreciation cost advantage per unit is similar to that of raw materials. With high processing technology (0. 11? m) to control yield rate (Samsung 80% vs Industry weighted average 59%), Samsung can produce more efficiently. So the depreciation per unit is lower. The production efficiency advantage (25%) is higher than the cost depreciation advantages (17%). That may because Samsung uses more advanced and expensive machine. e. Samsung’s advantage in unit RD cost may come from three ways. First, the competitive corporation culture drive employees to devote themselves in innovation. And the technical person works together with the manufacturing one, making the innovation process more efficient. Second, the innovation method is effective. The can use same core technology to develop different products types, such as the DDR and Rambus. Third, centralization of the RD facilities saves an average 12% fab construction costs. . Samsung’s unit SGA cost advantage comes from the efficient management structure of the country reducing the general administration cost and good reputation of products reducing the sales expenses. 3. 2 Analysis Samsung VS SMIC a. Compared to the industry composite, Samsung’s profit advantage over SMIC mainly from the price realization (70%), and the cost advantage only stands for 30%. The huge price g ap results from several aspects. First, the quality and reputation for SMIC is lower. Second, the technology SMIC used was one or two generation older than Samsung. Third, use the low price strategy to get the market share. Finally, SMIC using purchasing rights exchanging for technology partners, the price of product selling to their partner may be lower than the marketing price. b. The reason for Samsung’s unit material cost advantage seems similar to the one over industry composite. c. The disadvantage of labor cost is because the average salary of SMIC is only a quarter of Samsung. d. The reason for Samsung’s unit depreciation cost seems similar to the one over industry composite. The gap should be larger. However, the SMIC gets cheap loans and government support, and buy old product line from Motorola. These issues may help SMIC reduce the gap. e. Samsung’s unit RD cost advantages may be explained with SMIC’s start-up status. It usually spends a lot at the early age of innovation. To build a new fab for SMIC is more expensive than Samsung. f. The disadvantage of Samsung in unit SGA may be explained by SMIC’s strategy. Now, SMIC has to manufacture the products for their technology partners. SMIC seem to focus less on marketing their brands and become an OEM factory. 3. Can Samsung retain its cost advantage? If lose, what would happen at Samsung and SMIC? In my opinion, the main drive for Samsung’s profit is its innovation, which can lead to high selling price and low manufacturing cost. The raw materials advantages may be decreased with increasing SMIC production volume and advanced manufacturing technology. The labor disadvantage is hard to say because Chinese labor cost is also rising. The depreciation advantage may be decreased by the efficiency improvement of SMIC. The RD gap may also be decreased by the development of SMIC. SAG depend on to what degree SMIC want to promote their own brand. So the Samsung’s cost advantages over SMIC will be decreased in the future and even lose. However, assuming that someday Samsung loses its cost advantages, it is still very likely that Samsung is ahead of SMIC by one or two generation. Samsung still can make more profit by with higher selling prices. Even though SMIC can get government support and cheap funds, it cannot acquire the same kind of corporate culture and the centralized RD facility. By the way, SMIC cannot tolerant long time profit loses as a public company and the national security concerns may put more resource on logic chip. 4. Options and recommendations. a. Joint venture: Corporate with SMIC or other chip manufacturers in China to produce low end DRAM. Even the low end technology is attractive to China and get government support. Open the potential Chinese market and reduce cost. But it is hard to maintain the relationship with the constant requirement of technology transfer. b. OEM: License SMIC and make it as an OEM manufacture for Samsung. Transfer our low end technology to SMIC. The longer SMIC keeping the contract, the less threat. However, SMIC seems unwilling to accept this contract unless it faces profit pressure. SMIC’s ability may not reach the Samsung products requirement. . Focusing on our own business: Samsung’s core competency is constant and efficient innovation. Memory chip industry is technology-oriented and the advantage cannot be achieved in few years (Unless competitor gets breakthrough such as total substitute, which is little probability). The corporate value cannot be copied in a short time. Samsung may reallocate its resources of DRAM (profit, manufacturing capacity of old chips and RD) towards more promising flash memory business. By doing that it can still keep its leading position in memory chip industry. I recommend this option. How to cite Case Study for Samsung Electronics, Free Case study samples

My Experience From Germany to America Essay Example For Students

My Experience From Germany to America Essay My Name is Kevin Mike Senkel. Im 22 years old and I was born and raised in Germany. Getting to know me better here are some of my personal interests that I do spending my free time with: playing soccer or go to the gym , catch up with my friends or just hang out is what i like to do the most. Besides that I love sports like playing tennis, swimming, inline skating or ride my bicycle. Furthermore I like being doing creative things (doing arts, crafts and painting) but I also like hanging out with my friends like going to the cinema, bowling, barbecues, just having a good and fun time together. Traveling around and seeing new places in the world also belong to the things I love doing most. On rainy days I rather listen to music or read books or play some video games. I absolutely love watching horror movies, I also like comedy and and action movies. If my friends had to describe my personality theyd say the following things about me: that I am creative, humorous, funny, punctual, organized, athletic, a little â€Å"clumsy. † I come from a very small village from the southern part of Germany near Nurnberg which is located in the north of bavaria. There I live together with my dad and my older brother and Grandma. My brother Sven, he’s 24, he’s very interested in sports and techniques things. Some activity interests of him are playing soccer or go to the gym. Michelle, 13 is my sister, she loves doing sports like athletics and tennis. Shes also very creative. Although she is still in school she already know what she wants to do later. Its her dream to become an Doctor for animals. My dad Werner is 47 years old and works as an warehouse manager, he likes play soccer and riding his mountain bike. Birgit, my mom is 45 years old, works as an Nurse, she loves to read good books. My parents are both very busy because they work all day at their offices. But on the weekends I try to spend some time with my mum or dad. Sometimes we go out for dinner. Our sixth housemate is our first pet, he’s a cat called Sammy. We have him now since about six years he’s very cute and very lazy. Where we live is called like a paradise for cats, there are no very busy streets and no big building lots or something like that good for all the younger kids who live in our neighborhood that the surrounding is very quiet and relaxing. In our backyard there are lots of trees and large fields of farmers where Sammy can climb onto. Because we live in a little village with only about 800 inhabitants we have no big stores around and not even a big grocery store. We only have to drive a couple of minutes to town for shopping. This little place is called Oberstdorf and resides in franconia, near Nurnberg. I really love the area where I live, because it’s so green and because of the beautiful nature. Even the bigger cities like Bamberg, Nuernberg or Erlangen still have many green areas, so theyre not grey and dull comparing them to Berlin. The â€Å"center† of the Bavarian forest is only a 30-min drive away from our house, walking through the national park on another weekend and breathing the fresh air is a really good balance to the stress at school or work. People come especially just because they need a time out from their busy works, so they spend weekend trips in the Black Forest. For that reason many tourists come to visit this place. It gets more and more popular. .u446b0064cd055e1d86d7609dc7c4f87b , .u446b0064cd055e1d86d7609dc7c4f87b .postImageUrl , .u446b0064cd055e1d86d7609dc7c4f87b .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u446b0064cd055e1d86d7609dc7c4f87b , .u446b0064cd055e1d86d7609dc7c4f87b:hover , .u446b0064cd055e1d86d7609dc7c4f87b:visited , .u446b0064cd055e1d86d7609dc7c4f87b:active { border:0!important; } .u446b0064cd055e1d86d7609dc7c4f87b .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u446b0064cd055e1d86d7609dc7c4f87b { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u446b0064cd055e1d86d7609dc7c4f87b:active , .u446b0064cd055e1d86d7609dc7c4f87b:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u446b0064cd055e1d86d7609dc7c4f87b .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u446b0064cd055e1d86d7609dc7c4f87b .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u446b0064cd055e1d86d7609dc7c4f87b .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u446b0064cd055e1d86d7609dc7c4f87b .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u446b0064cd055e1d86d7609dc7c4f87b:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u446b0064cd055e1d86d7609dc7c4f87b .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u446b0064cd055e1d86d7609dc7c4f87b .u446b0064cd055e1d86d7609dc7c4f87b-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u446b0064cd055e1d86d7609dc7c4f87b:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: My Personal Goals as a Student EssayThere are so many things to adventure, in the South we have many lakes and some cathedrals surrounding Bamberg to visit. Our area is also famous for the delicious foods, like the â€Å"Spà ¤tzle, or the â€Å"Sauerbraten† and also for the good wines and beers. I think that America shows the largest diversity of people, cultures and lifestyles in the entire world. That’s one of the reasons why I wanted to become an Au Pair in America. In the year 2000, when I was about six years old, my family got divorced and my mum moved to a town close to where i live with my dad. But the most important issue becoming an Au Pair in America is that I love to spend my time with kids at any kind of age, because in my family I have many younger cousins, all at the age between six and 15 years. Before I came to America I was an athletic coach working with kids at the age of first graders. I also watched some of the kids in our neighborhood and soon I recognized I’d love to do a work that has to do with kids, even better, somewhere else in the world where I can improve speaking in a different language. Becoming an insight of another family’s life with their children and helping the busy parents by taking care of their kids and supporting them however and wherever I can. It’s great being a part of their life and seeing how the kids grow up. I am really happy being in my current host family, I’m here since the 19th of August 2012. This family is very similar to mine in Germany. Except that the boy are much younger. The parents Kaveh and Christine Naficy work hard and long every day. I am taking care of one kid, his name is Khia. The little sweetheart is 4 years old and loves to swim, play tennis and does gymnastics. He goes to two schools every day. One in the morning and the other on in the afternoon. He loves going to school and meeting his friends there. The family also has a pet, a male dog named Harry. He is trained several commands, so he behaves very well. A really cute dog. Kiah and I have a very busy week. He has practice in tennis and gymnastics every week. Usually, on Mondays, he participates in gymnastics. The place where he participates is close by. Its only a 5 minute ride by car. Sometimes it gets kind of crazy when a little kid is very tired and starts fooling around, so Im happy for that when my host mum tries to support me. A normal day is like they get home from school, he is eating lunch, then he might have a short time doing or playing something on his own and then he need to get ready for his afternoon school. That means for me that I have to be super organized and make sure, he gets to his practices on time. Usually this works very well, but sometimes Kiah is very tired some things like getting dressed take a longer time. In general I have a lot of fun feeling responsible and just doing this great kind of job with Kiah. I can say, that this is one of the best decisions I ever couldve made. Driving the car is my most important tool challenging my schedule. Here I live in the borough of Morristown, in Madison in the Garden State New Jersey. I soon recognized why it’s called like that, because in our town there are a lot of green places, we even have woods in our backyard. This place is so nice and I really enjoy living here. Our house is very close to town, it only takes about five minutes to get everywhere, the train station, Stop Shop, the gas station, library, the gym Madison seems to be famous for the Drew University, the Fairleigh Dickinson University and the beautiful downtown of Madison. .u53b7818a837168a73399f38930c6d948 , .u53b7818a837168a73399f38930c6d948 .postImageUrl , .u53b7818a837168a73399f38930c6d948 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u53b7818a837168a73399f38930c6d948 , .u53b7818a837168a73399f38930c6d948:hover , .u53b7818a837168a73399f38930c6d948:visited , .u53b7818a837168a73399f38930c6d948:active { border:0!important; } .u53b7818a837168a73399f38930c6d948 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u53b7818a837168a73399f38930c6d948 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u53b7818a837168a73399f38930c6d948:active , .u53b7818a837168a73399f38930c6d948:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u53b7818a837168a73399f38930c6d948 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u53b7818a837168a73399f38930c6d948 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u53b7818a837168a73399f38930c6d948 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u53b7818a837168a73399f38930c6d948 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u53b7818a837168a73399f38930c6d948:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u53b7818a837168a73399f38930c6d948 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u53b7818a837168a73399f38930c6d948 .u53b7818a837168a73399f38930c6d948-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u53b7818a837168a73399f38930c6d948:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Information Age EssayIt takes me only 50 min by train to get to New York City. Other cities like Boston or Washington D. C. are about a two hour drive away. Also great is that there are so many other Au Pairs who live in my town, especially the Germans take up the majority. Of course there are also a lot of Au Pairs from other countries, like Sweden or Finland. We have set up a Starbucks meeting every Tuesday where we meet and talk about how things are going in the family, with the kids and other things like planning the weekends or even some travels together. So we have our own little community. Here we have so many options making new experiences and getting new impressions of the â€Å"American way of life. Ive never been to New York City before, so it was an awesome and at the same time a kind of unreal feeling standing on top of the rock and enjoying the view over the Empire State Building, the Central Park and all the other famous sights of the City that never seems to sleep. I want to go to Florida for another time; one of my biggest dreams ever is swimming with dolphins. I saw them at sea World and was totally impressed by these beautiful creatures. Of course I also like to travel to the other coast of America and visit places like the Grand Canyon, Death Valley, LA, Las Vegas, in my 13th month Ill do a tour at the West coast. Besides my lovely work with the kids I’d also like to spend some of my free time traveling around, because there is so much to discover and learn about. A lot of Au Pairs do Bus tours to Boston, Philadelphia or Washington D. C. After my year as an Au Pair I’m going back to Germany for doing physical therapy, that also has to do with my year in America, because I love learning and talking in different languages. I know German and english. But I mostly like English. Parts of studying physical therapy are about the anatomy and the recovering after a surgery. During my year in America I can collect a lot of information and useful impressions for my studies. In a couple of years Id like to be done with my studying and live in my own little flat in Bamberg, becoming independent but still I can visit my family on the weekends. I’d like to have my own car and start working. Besides traveling through my work I’d like to come back to the US and visit my host family to see how the kids are doing and how theyve changed. I am pretty sure that I will miss them and they will always welcome me for a visit or stay. A lot of other young people who were Au Pairs a few years ago come back to visit their host families even after several years. Staying in touch with the family after my year is very important for me because they now give me a place that I can call as my second home and that I’m always welcomed. It’s a great experience that I’ll never forget. Live your life and enjoy the day.

Johnny Tremain Essays (527 words) - Johnny Tremain,

Johnny Tremain When the book started, Johnny was an annoying pain who always fought and always made bad comments about people. Ever since his mother had died, he has been a blacksmith's apprentice working under a man named Mr. Lampham. His mother arranged for it to be that way before she died. She left Johnny with a silver cup. It was told to Johnny that when all of his hope is lost, and God has turned away from him, then only shall he go to the merchant Lyte and present it to him. Johnny kept it in a chest in the attic all locked up. Johnny was the easiest to teach the art of being a blacksmith. He could read and write, and was a fast learner. This made him the most valuable in the family. He always treated the other learners very badly. This is why one day, they played a trick on him. Johnny and Mr. Lampham had a very important client they were working for. They were going to make him a special bowl for his wife's birthday. Johnny was working all week on the handles he was to design. He came close to the end of the week but he still hadn't got it perfectly right. On Saturday he was told that he couldn't work because he couldn't work on Sabbath. So, Johnny told Mrs. Lampham about this and she said that he could secretly work on Sunday. While Johnny was working, One of the other workers handed him a broken piece which had a crack in the side. It broke and silver when everywhere. Johnny's hand went on the stove. He nearly burned it, it was completely silver on his palm. They called for an old lady. A month later, they were going to unwrap his hand out of the cloth they put it in. When they took off the cloth, it was crippled. Johnny's thumb grew into his other fingers. He couldn't work as a blacksmith so he became useless. Mr. Lampham told Johnny to go look for another job. So Johnny went into town and looked with no luck. He came upon a Printers work place and soon started working there. He became friends with guy named Rab, who was two years older than he was. Johnny learned to control his temper while with Rab, and read many of their books which they had. He was taught by Rab to ride a horse. Johnny learned to ride one of the toughest horses. The horse's name was Goblin. Johnny went into other towns delivering papers to subscribers on Goblin. He still found a place to meet Cill, a girl whom he liked in Mr. Lampham's house. He met her in the middle of town. She gave him updates on news which happened recently. Johnny later began part of the Tea Party. He was there throwing tea even with his bad hand. When the British were here, Rab wanted one of their guns because it seemed more modernized than ours. So he talked one soldier into giving him his gun so that the man could be a farmer. Rab fought hard but was killed at Lexington and Concord. Johnny was never found again. At the end of the book, Johnny learned to be a better person overall.

Hum 130 Dq Responses Essays Hum 130 Dq Responses Essay Hum 130 Dq Responses Essay bellaonline. com/articles/art19100. asp cultureandrecreation. gov. au/articles/indigenous/ An Indigenous religion in Japan is called Shinto. Shinto’s believe that the gods or spirits are found in all things living. Shrines were build around Japan once Buddhism became apart of the Japanese life style. Modern Civilization impacted the religion and people who believed in it when the government altered Shintoisim and created â€Å"State Shinto† for publicity purposes. Indigenous Religions are still practiced today. Another Indigenous religion is the Sami Culture. Sami indigenous religion is a type of worship that drumming and, chanting, yoiking, was of singular importance. It was mostly composed of family members working to become a gate way for souls. Traditionally, the healer and protector is called a noaide. This religion is more difficult to fathom being factual because of the extreme this religion is slowly disappearing. The drums have been the most important tool to the Sami. It is the main communicator. The Sami believe in the â€Å"free Soul† This religion is changing because it is slowly disappearing. Due Date: Day 4 [Main Forum] Read Chapter 2 (Indigenous Sacred Ways) Post your response to these questions: As suggested by Fisher (2005) in Living Religions, consider the interrelatedness of everything in the cosmos as it is expressed in many indigenous religions. How do you think the importance of these relationships developed? What spiritual purpose do you think they serve for indigenous peoples? Post your response to the d iscussion question by clicking on Reply What I perceived from Fisher (2005) about the importance of interrelationships between everything in the cosmos was that people learned to reverence what was sacred and pure. Some Indigenous people use the circle as a sign of unity. The circle has no beginning or end it is infinite. It is said that a circle is the perfect framework for harmony. Fisher (2005) states, â€Å"Life revolves around the generational cycles of birth, youth, maturity, and physical death, the return of the seasons, the cyclical movements of the moon, sun, stars, and planets. † This idea stands as an example for the indigenous people to live by. The importance of this relationship between universe and humans is important. Indigenous people live by the circle because they know that good things will come back around to them if they live accordingly. Life does have a funny way of repeating itself.

The Scenario of Arthur Wilson Who Wanted to Leave Some Charitable Case Study

The Scenario of Arthur Wilson Who Wanted to Leave Some Charitable Gifts - Case Study Example It should be noted that donations, under common law, acquire legal status of â€Å"charitable gifts† after they have been transferred (Volkmer, 2010, p. 39). However, under civil law, charitable gifts are already legally valid even though they may require other formalities such as the contract for charitable giving being done in writing (Domen, 2009, p. 79). Also, it is worth noting that charitable gifts are tax deductible; a situation informed by the view that they result in reducing the income tax of the state. PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP (2002, p. 21) explains that before charitable gifts are executed, the validity of the provisions for such charitable gifts should be established. Advice to the executors will be based on the English Law provisions and common law rulings that relate to charitable gifts. According to Hughes and Klein (2007, p. 14), most charitable givers usually employ the services of executors to execute their charitable cause. Executors are defined as the pe rsons who have a fiduciary duty of property administration and should discharge the duty in accordance with the grantor’s/ testator’s wishes expressed in his or her will (Englebrecht, and Anderson, 2005, p. 1). Arthur’s executors should be in a better position, legally, to make charitable gifts. As such, it is important that they be conversant with the criterion of determining the validity of Arthur’s provisions regarding charitable gifts. Although Arthur in his will had provided the provisions for charitable gifts, the executors can determine their validity and determine whether to make some changes or execute them as provided by Arthur. Therefore, what advice is appropriate to Arthur’s executors in regard to the validity of each of the following provisions in Arthur’s will on charitable gifts? a) I give? 50,000 to promote the music of the famous composer Benjamin Britten and to fund research into what links, if any, there are between his m usic and the great composers of the past. The provision is valid as it falls under one of the four main divisions that charitable gifts are considered valid- education.

2 discussion questions Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

2 discussion questions - Essay Example The business may also have seasonal nature. Liquidity ratios: Company A is more appealing to a potential lender – its current ratio is about the industry average while Company B’s is way less. Moreover, A’s quick ratio exceeds average (which, though, may be a sign of not very efficient cash and cash securities management). Efficiency ratios: for the industry in general average collection period decreased by 2 days in 2002, and inventory turnover increased. Turnover growth rate for both A and B was positive but less than industry average. Additionally, average collection period went up. Collection discipline and overall asset management should be examined closely. Profitability ratios: Company B has an advantage vs. A in all three categories, though both companies and the industry overall show positive growth. Using Du-Pont system (see graphs on the next page), one can see that both companies have lower than average asset turnover but B compensate for it with high operating profit margin and achieves high ROA. By dividing the book value of UPS ($16.884bln) by the number of shares (1.07bln as indicated at Yahoo Finance resource) we get book value per share of $15.78. Market value per share as of 3rd January 2007 is $74.97. For FDX, book and market value per share equal to $37.48 ($11.511bln / 307.12M ) and $109.77. UPS market value can be calculated as $74.97 per share x 1.07bln shares = $80.218 bln and its market value added is $80.218bln - $16.884bln = $63.334bln. FDX market value: $109.77 per share x 307.12M shares = $33.712 bln and market value added equals to $33.712 bln - $11.511bln = $22.210bln. A difference between book value and market value of a company exists because investing into a company is not equivalent to buying its building or production lines; it is investment into the way company’s assets are utilized,

Why Do Cultural Differences Within Urban Chicago High Schools Results Essay

Why Do Cultural Differences Within Urban Chicago High Schools Results In So Many Discipline Problems - Essay Example The study intends to use questionnaires, interview schedules, observation as well as focus- group discussion in gathering relevant data for the study. Culture is people’s way of life. It denotes what a people value and abides to as normal. It is that complex whole of a people’s collective experience in life. It includes religion, political, economical, ethics, social and aesthetic. As the report declares ethnicity is an inheritance where members of a particular group perceive each other as emotionally bounded by a common set of traditional, worldviews, history, and heritage. The issue of ethnic and cultural identity has been a dominant and salient issue of many minority ethnic groups for along time. America institutions of learning have been the battlefield of this identity struggle. The high schools in urban Chicago have experiencing high incidences of racial and ethnicity related indiscipline where the students fail to uphold cultural tolerance towards teachers and other students from different cultural background. This has led to physical attacks, lack of respect and general deterioration of discipline in schools. There is increase in cultural related crimes and misbehaviour among students in urban Chicago. Chicago times reported that a group of white students attacked and racially abused a senior honour student. There have been incidences of violence every day and each time is a student from one race attacking another from a different race. Normally, they hail racial sentiments at each other. This has made many students to fear attending schools since a day cannot pass without a violence incidence in school. This has made school administration to hire security guards and seek police help in keeping law and order in schools in Chicago (Chicago Sun Times, November 8th, 2006). Bona in his article mentions riots, mass protests and violence as some of the poignant index of student indiscipline among college and university students in India. He also identifies incidences where students disrupt examinations, physical attacks on respected professors and administrators as pointers of indiscipline among students. He attempts to explain the causes of students' indiscipline as falling into three major categories namely; psycho-social, economic and political. For him, students in developing nations are most likely to misbehave due to political reasons when institutions raise student expectations too high and fail to deliver. However, for minority groups in a dominant culture, students' misbehaviour may be as a result of economic suppression and psycho-social reasons. A look at the highly respected cultural values of Indian community no one would ever associate students unrest with their cultural

Little Red Riding Hood | Psychology analysis

Little Red Riding Hood | Psychology analysis Even though there are abundant approaches engaging in understanding literature, the psychoanalytic interpretation attempts to make use of the symbolic secrecy of a work. In contrast to the orderly approach, which focuses exclusively on the wording and the captivating aspect of the psychoanalytic interpretation is that it searches for a purpose further than what is seen in the text. By distrusting the existence of intrinsic and hidden motives, it allows for a wide range of abstract and creative possibilities. Freuds theories were enormously influential, but subject to considerable criticism both now and during his own life (Cherry). His psychoanalytical theories are used today for a better understanding in analyzing literature. When the psychoanalytical theory of personality is being applied in Charles Perraults, Little Red Riding Hood, it suggests evidence toward sexual motivations and it integrates with Sigmund Freuds psychic apparatus which contain the three key zones of the mental processes which are the id, ego and superego. Sigmund Freud pioneered the establishment of the psychoanalytical idea behind his principle theory that all human behavior is primarily motivated by sexuality. Throughout Charles Perraults, Little Red Riding Hood, there were various amounts of sexual associations throughout the story. Even the moral of the story suggests being cautious against smooth-tongued and dangerous beasts which like to dispossess young ladies of their innocence. Likewise, the wolf does not just consume the grandmother, but instead, he immediately fell upon the good women and ate her up in a moment (Perrault). Furthermore, before eating Little Red Riding Hood, he invites her to come in the bed with him. At which point, she took off her clothes and got into bed. She was greatly amazed to see how her grandmother looked in her nightclothes (Perrault). After she thoroughly examines and comments on the body parts of the wolf, he then threw himself upon Little Red Riding Hood (Perrault) to consume her as well. In res ponse to such direct and obvious seduction, Little Red Riding Hood showed no motive to escape or fighting back. Either she is an ignoramus or she wanted to be misled. Furthermore, Perrault also makes use of another example: Put the cakes and the little pot of butter on the bin and climb into bed with me (Perrault). Little Red Riding Hood does not disagree and felt obligated to follow the wolfs wishes, which shows her sexuality and desire for the wolf. With these details Little Red Riding Hood is changed from an unsuspecting, attractive young girl, who was persuaded to disobey her mothers warnings and enjoys herself in what she believes to be innocent. These clear references in the text are proof of evidence that support Freuds theories on the psychoanalytical approach. In the beginning of Little Red Riding Hood, Little Red Riding Hood sets off on an adventure into the woods to go deliver goodies to her grandmother where then, she met with a wolf, who had a very great mind to eat her up (Perrault) and continues to have a sociable conversation with the wolf. This was Little Red Riding Hoods first mistake. Young and unaware about the ways of the world, she thought it was normal to talk to a dangerous wolf. Since the little girl is young and vulnerable, since Little Red Riding Hood is friendly and ignorant she doesnt think that there is anything wrong with talking to a stranger that comes across in the woods. The wolf asks Little Red where her grandmother lives, she responded, A good quarter of a league farther on in the wood; her house stands under the three large oak-trees, the nut-trees are just below; you surely must know it (Grimm). She wasnt thinking thoroughly of what could come of her informing the wolf of where her grandmother lives. Due to Li ttle Red Riding Hoods ignorance of what might happen due to her irresponsible choice of speaking with a dangerous and senseless wolf. When accurately applying the psychoanalytical approach, it is appropriate to prove the interactions of the human mind. The concept of the unconscious mind inspire human behavior is essential to the examination of Perraults, Little Red Riding Hood. Cherry expresses the thought that, Sigmund Freud believed that there were three psychic zones of the mental processes: id, ego and superego (The Id, Ego and Superego). In Little Red Riding Hood, Little Red Riding Hoods elders, grandmother and mother represent the superego in the story. They both raise Little Red Riding Hood by helping to protect and control her motives and desires. On the other hand, the wolf symbolizes the id. Lacking both the logic and rule of action, he only functions only to reach full satisfaction. The wolf is guilty of giving into his own uncontrolled desires. When the wolf first catches sight of the young girl he, wanted to eat her up, but he dared not, because of some woodcutters working nearby in the forest (Perrau lt). The wolf refrained himself from giving into his own urges because he was afraid of being mauled by the woodcutters nearby. Unfortunately, the wolf did not stay hungry for long. Giving into his voluptuous desires, he beat the girl to her grandmothers house and ate her. Once he ate the grandmother he couldnt ignore his desires anymore. The wolf doesnt think with his mind, but instead with his stomach. Cherry explains that, The id is driven by the pleasure principle, which strives for immediate gratification of all desires, wants, and needs. If these needs are not satisfied immediately, the result is a state anxiety or tension (The Id, Ego and Superego). The wolf relied on his aggression and desires to obtain what he wanted as his end result. Little Red Riding Hood on the other hand served as the middle man between self-control and utter confusion. Little Red Riding Hood symbolizes the ego and attempts to balance both the id and superego. At the beginning of the story Little Red Riding Hood who was described as being the, prettiest creature who was ever seen (Perrault). With her mother so adoring of her, she later enters into the woods where she confronts the id. At this point, she disobeys her mothers instructions, and evolves to being a poor child. The moral of the story, is that these young women maybe well broug ht up but they still turn unwise and ignorant when they do speak to strangers. Being considered as the prettiest creature, it was Little Red Riding Hoods own fault for leaning too far into the senseless id. Furthermore, Sigmund Freud suggests that this struggle of the psychic apparatus of the three mental processes of the psychoanalytical theory of personality can only conclude to the death of Little Red Riding Hood, which inevitably also turned out to be the fate of her grandmother. At the end of the story, the foolishness of the main characters comes to an all time high. Little Red Riding Hood is extremely happy when she gets to see her sick grandmother and try and cheer her up. Little Red Riding Hood being ignorant and unaware she does not realize that her grandmother is actually the wolf who she met earlier. If she was more observant and not so wrapped up in her own little world, she could have realized that there was something truly wrong with the way her grandmother looked. She currently had no common sense in this situation. The wolf, who has one thing on his mind, tricks her in telling him where her grandmother lives. The wolf is certainly no better than the little girl in this situation. The wolf could care less about anything else, except his only motivation which is to get Little Red Riding Hood into bed with him. Put the cake and the butter down on the bread-bin and come and lie down with me (Perrault). The wolfs only goal is to satisfy his uncontroll able desires. The wolf does not know right from wrong, he just reacts to his animalistic desires. The wolf is id driven creature whose only goal in life is to please himself by any means necessary. Both Little Red Riding Hood and the wolf are both guilty of giving into their id. The moral of the story cautions the reader that the wolf in the story is going to try and take advantage of any ignorant or vulnerable creatures. These young girls are able to act on their desires and act as bad girls. Everyone is capable of giving into their own temptations and what is not necessarily the right thing to do. Despite the fact that the psychoanalytic approach is used for interpretation of literature, it proves to be entirely intriguing. In stories such as this, the sexual motives are clearly seen, and thus confirming the complexity behind the approach. Maybe it is a bit untraditional. However, this examination remains both thought disturbing and brilliantly intriguing.

Japan: 1945 conflicts and internal politics Essay -- essays research p

Discuss the occupation of Japan from 1945 to 1952. What effects did the purges have on political and business leadership in Japan and to what degree did this action have on the continuity or discontinuity between pre-war and post-war elites? What actions led SCAP to â€Å"reverse† its policies from around 1948? What were the aims and goals of the occupation forces? The occupation of Japan began in August 1945 and ended in April 1952. General MacArthur was the first Supreme Commander. The entire operation was for the most part carried out by the United States. Japan in essence lost all the territory obtained after 1894. The remnants of Japan's war machine were gone, and war crime trials were held. Approximately 500 military officers committed suicide shortly after Japan surrendered, and hundreds more were executed for committing war crimes. The Emperor was not declared a war criminal. A new constitution went into effect in 1947: The emperor lost all political and military power, and was solely the symbol of the state. Universal suffrage was introduced and human rights were now guaranteed. Japan was also forbidden to lead a war again or to maintain an army. MacArthur also intended to break up power concentrations by dissolving the zaibatsu and other large companies, and by decentralizing the education system and the police. In a land reform, concentrations in land ownership were removed. During the first half of the occupation, Japan's media was subject to rigid censorship of any anti-American statements and controversial topics. The co-operation between the Japanese and the Allied powers worked relatively well. Critics began to grow when the United States acted according to self-interests in the Cold War. The United States reintroduced the persecution of the communists, stationed even more troops in Japan, and wanted Japan to establish its own self defense force despite the anti-war article in the constitution. Many aspects of the occupation's so called "reverse course" were welcomed by conservative Japanese politicians. With the peace treaty that went into effect in 1952, the occupation ended. Discuss the significant features of post-war Japan that has lead Japan to become on of the leading industrial nations of the world. Emphasize the economic activities of the 1960’s and 1970’s. After the end of World War II, Japan's economy was a disaster, ... ...opment priorities and scale down its commitments. However, the signing of this arrangement mirrored the desire on both sides to advance relations. In April 1978, a disagreement involving the incursion of armed Chinese fishing boats into the waters off the Senkaku Islands, a collection of barren islets north of Taiwan and south of the Ryukyu Islands, flared up and endangered the developing momentum toward a continuation of peace treaty talks. Self-control on both sides led to an agreeable solution. Talks on the peace treaty were resumed in July, and an arrangement was reached in August on a compromise version of the antihegemony clause. The Treaty of Peace and Friendship was signed on August 12 and came into effect October 23, 1978. Thus, common strategic concerns, as well as economic interests, held the two nations together. Until the late 1970s, China appeared more alarmed than Japan about the Soviet military buildup in Asia. But as the Soviet Union increasingly sought to impede strategic cooperation among Japan, the United States, and possibly China, in part by stepped-up intimidation of Japan, the Nakasone government became more concerned about the Soviet military buildup.
